Saturday, October 8th- The Cleveland Barons opened a two game series against their in state rivals, the Mahoning Valley Phantoms at the Lakefront Lines Arena in Parma, OH. After a scoreless first period, the Barons jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Anthony McIntyre (Waterford, MI) scored his second goal of the year with Grant Tonne ( Garland, TX) and Eric Rex ( Fairview, PA) picking up the assists. The Phantoms would even the score, three minutes later on a Drew Satterley goal. The goaltending duel between the Barons Kenny Reiter (Pittsburgh, PA) and the Phantoms Ryan Zapolski continued to the end of regulation. After a scoreless overtime the teams went to five man shootout with the Phantoms Matt Quigley scoring the only goal to give Mahoning Valley the 2-1 win.
Sunday, October 9th- The Mahoning Valley Phantoms came out and jumped to a 1-0 lead on a Matt Atsoff goal. The Phantoms would score the next four goals to increase their lead to 5-0 on goals from Mike Maltese (2), Marc Menzione and Owen Meyer. The Barons would answer back with two late period goals by Ryan Ward (Saline, MI), his 5th goal of the year with John Kennedy (Saginaw, MI) and Chris Reed (Solon, OH) picking up the assists. Barons defenseman, Pat Goebel (Parma, OH) would score his second goal of the year with Bill Hemann (Westlake, OH) and Brett Jendra (Darien, IL) picking up the assists to make it 5-2 Phantoms after two periods. The teams would trade goals in the third period with Chris Fairbanks scoring for the Phantoms and the Barons John Kivisto (Brighton, MI) scoring his second goal of the year with Carter Camper (Rocky River, OH) and Brett Jendra picking up the assists making the final score 6-3. Barons goalies Kenny Reiter and Bobby Jarosz (Crystal Lake, IL) combined for 25 saves in the game.
BARONS NOTES
Barons center Carter Camper continues to lead the NAHL in scoring with 14 pts (7G-7A). Forward Josh Leonard (Allen Park, MI) is tied for fourth in the scoring lead with 11pts (5G-6A). Defenseman John Kivisto is second in scoring among defensemen with 7pts (2G-5A)
BARONS ALUMNI UPDATE
Former Barons Forward Mike Ruberto (Canisius/Stoney Creek,ONT) had a five point night (2G-3A) against Robert Morris University. Defenseman Pat Henk ( Mercyherst/ Mentor, OH) picked up an assist this weekend against Michigan Tech.
UPCOMING GAMES
The Barons will close out their homestand this weekend against the Mahoning Valley Phantoms at the Lakefront Lines Arena in Parma, OH. Game times are Saturday, October15th at 7:30PM and Sunday, October 17th at 3:30PM. The barons the embark on 10 game stand away from Ohio where they will play in the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, MN ,Springfield , IL, Traverse City, MI and Alpena, MI.
