U.S. National Under-18 Team To Host Two Division I Opponents This Weekend

THIS WEEK: The U.S. National Under-18 Team will host Canisius College (2-0) of the Atlantic Hockey Legaue on Saturday night at 7 p.m. and Robert Morris University (0-2) of the College Hockey America Conference at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

U.S. HEAD COACH JOHN HYNES: John Hynes is in his third season with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program. Hynes has amassed a career record with the NTDP of 74-35-6.

U.S. HEAD COACH JOHN HYNES ON THIS WEEKEND: We are looking forward to a home series and having the chance to play two tough opponents in Robert Morris & Canisius. It will be a great test for our players to play at this level for back to back weeks.

NATIONAL TEAM DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM ALUMNI UPDATE: 2004-05 Hobey Baker Memorial Award Finalist, Brett Sterling (Pasadena, Calif.) had two goals and two assists in two games in route to Colorado College wining the 2005 Icebreaker Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo. ... University of Michigan freshman defenseman and third-overall selection in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft (Carolina Hurricanes), Jack Johnson (Faribault, Minn.) scored his first collegiate goal on Saturday night as home against Quinnipiac University ... After the first weekend of NCAA action, University of Michigan junior defenseman Matt Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) leads the nation in scoring with six points (3-3 ... Sophomore forward Bryan Lerg (Livonia, Mich.) recorded one goal and three assists to help Michigan State defeat North Dakota and Wayne State en route to winning the Lefty McFadden Invitational in Dayton, Ohio

ABOUT THE NTDP:

Founded in 1997, USA Hockey's National Team Development Program was created to prepare student-athletes under the age of 18 for participation on U.S. National Teams and success in their future hockey careers. The program has been instrumental in capturing gold medals at the 2002 and 2005 IIHF World Under-18 Championships and the 2004 IIHF World Junior Championship. This past summer 15 NTDP alumni were selected in the NHL Entry Draft. In the seven years NTDP players have been eligible for the NHL draft, 107 players have been selected.

U.S. NATIONAL UNDER-18 TEAM PLAYER NOTES: Forward James O'Brien (Maplewood, Minn.) will be out of the line-up this weekend

TIDBITS: This is the first time Canisius College has visited the Ann Arbor Ice Cube ... The NTDP has an overall record versus NCAA Division I teams of 37-49-15-2 for a winning percentage of .359

LAST WEEKEND: The U.S. National Under-18 Team earned a weekend split last weekend at Northern Michigan University and Lake Superior State University. On Friday night, Team USA lost to NMU 4-3 in Marquette, Mich. and on Saturday night they rebounded for a 4-3 win at LSSU. Erik Johnson (Bloomington, Minn.) lead the offensive attack for Team USA on Saturday night with three points (2-1).

UP NEXT: The U.S. National Under-18 Team will hit the road for a weekend in upstate New York. On Friday night, they will visit the hostile Lynah Rink to take on the Cornell University Big Red. Cornell is currently ranked fourth in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll. On Saturday night, Team USA take on the Golden Knights of Clarkson University.
