July 10, 2004 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Jacksonville Slam News Release
Jacksonville, FL. Larry Jacobs, GM/Director of Basketball Operations of the ABA Jacksonville Wave professional basketball team today named former NBA center Clemon Johnson as Head Coach.
Johnson, 47, has coached at the prep ranks since retiring from a 10-year NBA career that including winning a championship with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1983. He led the East Gadsden boys basketball team to the 2004 Class 3A state semifinals in the school's first season.
Johnson stated, "There's no doubt that we have a great challenge. There are many teams in the ABA with some outstanding coaches - so the competition should be tough. But we'll put together a very strong team and they'll be well coached. We're confident that we'll make the fans proud."
Jacobs concluded, "I think it sends a positive sign because Clemon makes a positive impression and impact on these young players. He's got that NBA championship ring; the experience is there. He has played with Julius Erving and other professionals and knows what it takes to win."
