Clearwater Threshers News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - Derek Campbell drove in three runs to back a strong start by Ranfi Casimiro, as the Clearwater Threshers knocked off the Tampa Yankees by a 5-2 final on Friday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Clearwater (19-9) took the series from Tampa (16-1), as the Threshers are now up three-games-to-one. The Threshers and Yankees entered with the best two records in the Florida State League, and are first and second in the league in runs scored.
The Threshers struck first against Ian Clarkin (2-3) by plating two runs in the second, and Clearwater is now 15-2 when scoring first this season.
Mitch Walding opened the frame by pulling a single through the right side, and Zach Green followed with a double to deep center. After Malquin Canelo walked to load the bases, Drew Stankiewicz's double play ball pushed home the game's first run.
Campbell then laced a double into left, scoring Green to make it 2-0.
After a Casimiro balk allowed a run to cross for Tampa in the bottom half, the Threshers got some distance in the fourth.
With Green and Canelo aboard, Stankiewicz singled to right to bring home Green. Campbell followed that up by pulling a two-run triple to left, bumping the advantage to 5-1.
Casimiro (4-1) earned the victory by holding the league's top offense to just two runs on five hits across six innings. He did not issue a walk and collected five strikeouts.
Lefties Joey DeNato and Joely Rodriguez combined to work three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, and Rodriguez tossed the final two for his first save with the Threshers.
The series wraps up on Saturday night with a 6 p.m. first pitch, as Michael Mariot (0-0) is scheduled to take the hill in his third appearance of a rehab assignment. Chance Adams (1-0) has the start for Tampa. The game can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network beginning at 5:45 p.m.
