Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER (Tuesday, April 16): The Clearwater Threshers administered a 15-6 Bright House Field beat-down to the visiting Daytona Cubs Tuesday night, evening the three-game series at a game apiece in front of 3,243 happy fans.
The Threshers (6-6) rebounded from an 8-1 loss the previous night and scored in every inning. Daytona (6-6) held the lead until the bottom of the fifth, at which point the Threshers surged ahead and never looked back. Clearwater rolled up 27 hits, tying a Florida State League record for most hits in a single game by one team. The mark had been achieved five times previously, with Daytona doing it most recently in 10 innings in 1998. The last nine-inning performance belonged to the now-defunct Cocoa Indians, all the way back in 1957.
Each team scored in the opening three innings, with the Cubs racing out to a 5-3 lead. But Clearwater kept chipping away, scoring one in the fourth and three in the fifth to chase Cubsstarter and reigning FSL Pitcher of the Week Ryan Searle (1-1) and begin the blowout. Clearwater added a run in the sixth before scoring six in the seventh inning and one more in the eighth to run their tally to 15 runs. Daytona notched a run in the ninth to bring the game to its final tally.
Every Clearwater hitter in the lineup recorded multiple hits, with shortstop (and #9 hitter) Jose Mojica leading the way in a 5-for-5 performance. The Threshers had only three extra-base hits. Right fielder Cameron Perkins went 4-for-4 with a double, three singles, a sacrifice fly, and a team-best four RBI.
Clearwater starter Perci Garner (2-0) picked up the win, allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks in 5.2 innings. He struck out five. Gabriel Arias allowed a hit and two walks in 2.1 scoreless frames, hitting a batter and whiffing four. Brandon Erbe allowed an unearned run in the ninth inning, giving up a hit and fanning two.
Searle was touched up for seven runs on 15 hits in his 4.2 innings of work; he struck out five. Hunter Cervenkagave up three runs on four hits and two walks over two innings, striking out one. Luis Liria allowed four runs on four hits and a walk while recording only a single out, striking out Threshers DH Harold Martinez. Catcher Taylor Davis was pressed into service for a single relief inning, allowing a run on four hits. All the runs were earned for the Daytona staff.
