Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs center Travis Clayton playing in his record-breaking 709th Central Hockey League game has been voted by the fans as this year's CHL Performance of the Year, the league announced today. Clayton's league record for career games played received 57% of the fans' online vote to beat out four other finalists as the CHL Performance of the Year.
Clayton's record-breaking achievement received 15,896 of the 27,703 votes cast during the online voting period at www.centralhockeyleague.com. Mudbugs goaltender Ken Carroll was also among the Performance of the Year finalists for his 45-save shutout effort against Mississippi on March 20 that stretched his league record to 29 career shutouts. The other finalists were: Arizona and Colorado combining for CHL record-tying 10 PP goals on 12/13, Amarillo's three goals in 45 seconds during a win at Odessa on 2/28 and Miguel Beaudry's shutout of Colorado in Rapid City's first ever home game on 11/29.
On November 21, 2008, Travis Clayton stepped on the Broomfield Events Center ice and made league history in the process as the Mudbugs visited the Rocky Mountain Rage. By skating in the 709th game of his CHL career that night, Clayton surpassed the league record previously held by former Oklahoma City Blazers great Joe Burton. Clayton played in all 64 games for the Mudbugs in 2008-09 to extend the record to 760 career games played by season's end. The Paradise Hill, Saskatchewan native has played all of his 12 professional seasons in the CHL with Wichita and now Bossier-Shreveport.
In addition to passing Burton for the CHL games played record this season, Clayton moved up the ladder in two other categories. The 5-8, 180-pound forward passed former Blazers defenseman Hardy Sauter for second in league history in assists and moved ahead of forward Doug Lawrence for second in points. Clayton finished the year ranking second in CHL history in goals (347), assists (539), and points (886).
Clayton was the Mudbugs' second-leading scorer this year with 52 points (21g, 31a). His 13 powerplay goals were tied for sixth in the CHL and a +16 rating placed him second on the team as well. He was Bossier-Shreveport's lone representative in the 2009 CHL All-Star Game, serving as a co-Captain for the CHL All-Stars in his seventh career appearance in the game. Clayton set the bar for the 'Bugs in the playoffs, producing seven goals and four assists in seven playoff games. As of today, his 11 playoff points are still tied for the league lead even though the Mudbugs were eliminated more than a week ago.
