Rhode Island FC News Release

PAWTUCKET, R.I. - Rhode Island FC Midfielder Clay Holstad has been named to the USL Championship Team of the Week following his performance in the club's inaugural 1-1 draw against New Mexico United Saturday. The 24-year-old impressed in his USL Championship debut, recording four shots and 78% passing accuracy in front of a sold-out Beirne Stadium.

During his six moments of possession in the final third, Holstad rattled the woodwork twice. The first came in the 32nd minute, when the midfielder stripped the ball off New Mexico defender Zico Bailey in the midfield before curling a shot past goalkeeper Alex Tamabakis and off the far post from just outside the 18-yard box. Thirteen minutes later, Tamabakis could only watch as Holstad's one-touch shot from a nearly identical position came inches from finding the top corner, nailing the crossbar.

Holstad, who's 90-minute performance was the first of his USL Championship career, signed with Rhode Island FC on January 12 following his first professional season with Columbus Crew 2 of MLS Next Pro. The Birmingham, Alabama native appeared in 26 matches last season, including every minute of the club's playoff run to the MLS Next Pro Final for the second consecutive year.

Rhode Island FC returns to USL Championship action on Sunday, March 24 (6 p.m. ET) when the club travels to California to take on Monterey Bay F.C. Fans can take in the match from the Rhode Island FC Official Watch Party at Providence Brewing Company or tune in live on NESN or ESPN+. After another road match the following week at Tampa Bay Rowdies (7:30 p.m., ESPN+), RIFC returns to Beirne Stadium on Saturday, April 6 (7:30 p.m.) to host defending Eastern Conference Champions Charleston Battery. Tickets to the next home match are available now at rhodeislandfc.com/tickets.
