Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
CARSON, Calif. (Thursday, January 20, 2011) ¬" Chivas USA announced on Thursday that legendary Mexican defender Claudio Suárez, a member of Chivas USA from 2006-2009 and the most capped Mexican National Team player of all-time, has joined the club as an advisor to the front office. In his new role with the Red-and-White, Suárez will work as a consultant with Interim General Manager Jose Domene and the rest of the soccer committee, and will also scout players in Mexico.
¬ÅClaudio is a true legend in the soccer world, and we ¬â¢re thrilled that he ¬â¢ll be working with us again at Chivas USA, ¬Â said Interim General Manager Jose Domene. ¬ÅHis experience as a player, understanding of the game in both Mexico and the United States, and eye for talent will help us both in the short and long term. Claudio is an important part of the Chivas USA family, and we ¬â¢re happy to have him working with our front office. ¬Â
¬ÅThis is an exciting new opportunity with a club that I know and love, ¬Â said Suárez. ¬ÅIt will give me the chance to work both in Los Angeles and Mexico, helping strengthen the club in a number of different areas, especially scouting. I enjoyed my time at Chivas USA and I ¬â¢m looking forward to more success with the team in the future. ¬Â
As part of this new role, Suárez will visit Chivas de Guadalajara ¬â¢s facilities tomorrow and will conduct specialized clinics on defensive skills to first team and youth team players.
Joining Chivas USA in 2006, Suárez immediately became an important part of the club both on and off the field. Serving as the team ¬â¢s captain, Suárez made a total of 64 regular season appearances (59 starts), scoring nine goals, and was named the team ¬â¢s Defender of the Year in 2006 and 2007. A true leader, Suárez led the team off the field as well: always quick to lend a hand to charitable causes, Suárez is a respected voice for players, coaches, media and fans around Southern California and beyond. In 2008 and 2009, he was given the team award for the player who best represents the spirit of Chivas USA; in 2010, it was renamed the Claudio Suárez Award in his honor.
Known as 'El Emperador' ('The Emperor'), Suárez was for years a mainstay as Mexico ¬â¢s captain, and is currently number two overall in international appearances among male soccer players worldwide, having played for Mexico 178 times from 1992-2006. Suárez was also a member of Mexico ¬â¢s World Cup squads in 1994, 1998 and 2006. He was a key player at top Mexican First Division clubs Pumas, Chivas and Tigres before joining Chivas USA in 2006.
Chivas USA will open preseason training camp tomorrow at The Home Depot Center in Carson as the team starts preparation for the 2011 Home Opener on March 19 against Omar Bravo and Sporting Kansas City. Season Seats for 2011 are now on sale, with prices remaining at the same low rates as 2010. For more information, or to purchase tickets, please call 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or visit cdchivasusa.com.
