Colorado Rapids News Release
A number of new faces have been added to the Rapids' roster, in a bid to bring about success. One man who knows all about success as a player is the club's new Director of Soccer, Claudio López, who is relishing his role as the team prepares for the season-opener against Philadelphia Union on March 7.
"I'm here to try and help Pablo as much as possible," López said. "I'm here to provide him with all my experience that will hopefully help the team, try to be the connection between Pablo and the Front Office and provide him with the best resources that we can offer so that he has everything for training."
López, who has a much more offensive approach to the game, has been working closely with the attacking players during training and is a big reason why he was brought on board prior to the 2015 season.
"I believe that we have a good team; I was not here for most of last season with the team so I can't give an opinion but I see the players very concentrated and very involved in what they have to do. They are trying to get to where Pablo wants them and I hope that we have a successful preseason."
The signing of "El Piojo" ("The Louse") seems to have started to pay off already with the recent signing of compatriot, Lucas Pittinari from Belgrano of the Argentine Primera División. López will work closely with Rapids' VP of Soccer Operations and Technical Director, Paul Bravo, as well as assist Mastroeni and the current coaching staff.
López, 40, scored more than 150 goals during an 18-year playing career with some of Europe and South and Central America's biggest clubs, including Lazio, Valencia, Club América and Racing Club. He also featured at the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups for Argentina, for whom he represented on more than 50 occasions.
The Colorado Rapids are in Las Vegas, and then head to Tucson on Monday for the remainder of preseason. In Tucson, the Rapids will face Sporting KC, New England Revolution and FC Tucson.
