Clams Slugged by Sharks

EDENTON, NC - The Edenton Steamers fell 11-4 in a slugfest against the Wilmington Sharks on Friday night. Edenton (7-9) continues to slide in the standings, losing their fourth straight game, while Wilmington (9-6) rattled off its sixth consecutive win.

Jesse Stinnett shouldered the loss for the Teal and Black. Stinnett (0-2) allowed three runs on four hits while walking one batter and fanning four in 5.2 innings of work.

Cody Tyler took the win for the Sharks. Tyler (1-0) surrendered two runs on five hits with three walks to six strikeouts through five innings. Kyler Stout finished the final three innings to collect the save. Stout gave up two runs on four hits, striking out four and walking one.

Brett Smith wasted no time getting the Sharks on the board, leading off the game with a home run. Michael Hungate added a second solo shot in the second inning to give Wilmington a 2-0 lead.

The Steamers jumped back into the game with two home runs of their own. Tony Rosselli's two out bomb cut the Wilmington lead in half in the third, and Andrew Hinckley knotted up the score with a dinger that snuck over the right field wall in the fourth.

The Sharks cracked their third home run, this one off the bat of Cletis Avery, in the sixth, following with two runs in the seventh to take a three-run lead.

Edenton cut down the deficit with a run in the seventh. Trey Hair drew a one-out walk, stealing second to put a runner in scoring position. After Bobby Schuman popped up to third for the second out, Rosselli knocked a double down the left field line to bring the score to 5-3.

Wilmington pulled away for good with six runs over the final two innings. Avery led off the seventh with a double, advancing to third on a flyout to center in the next at bat. Ryan Jeffers plated Avery with the second double of the inning, and he moved to third when Alec Bohm reached on a throwing error by the third baseman Andrew Hinckley. Jeffers came home a sacrifice fly to center from Grant Koch to stretch the Sharks' lead to 7-3. Bohm knocked a grand slam in the top of the ninth to polish of the scoring for Wilmington.

Tyler Ammerman led off the final frame with the seventh home run of the game, but the Clams couldn't find any other offense, falling 11-4.
