HiToms Hold on over SwampDogs

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.--The SwampDogs struck first but couldn't maintain the lead or push across key runs in the middle innings, falling 4-2 to the High Point-Thomasville HiToms Saturday night.
The SwampDogs opened the scoring in the second inning on a bases loaded sacrifice fly from Dan Neff but could not make the inning bigger before the HiToms took the lead for good in the third.
A two out, two run triple by Derek Scheible (Texas State) gave the HiToms a lead they would never relinquish. A two out bunt single by Drew Frederic (Troy) sparked an insurance run in the fourth and Myles Kutcher (Oswego State) added a solo home run in the seventh as the HiToms made the most of their six hits against SwampDogs' starter Mike Austin (UMBC).
Despite Austin being in command for much of the game, he was pitching from behind as the SwampDogs offense missed opportunities in the fourth and fifth innings to push across runs. The HiToms bullpen was stellar, working six innings of relief without allowing a run and stranding six SwampDogs on the bases.
Reid Clements (Middle Tennesse State) worked out of two jams to earn the win and improve to 1-0. Austin takes the hard luck loss to fall to 2-1. Austin Reich (Northwestern State) pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season.
The SwampDogs wrap up the home stand Sunday with a special 5:05pm start for Father's Day at The Swamp powered by Lumbee River EMC. All fathers are invited to play catch with their kids on their field after the game.
