
Chucks drop heart-breaker 9-5 to Loggers

La Crosse - After the Wisconsin Woodchucks took a 5-4 lead in the eighth on a two-run, two-out triple by Joe Serrano, the La Crosse Loggers would come back with a five-run bottom of the eighth to take the 9-5 victory and a three-game sweep of the "ËChucks. Austin Stadler got the start for the Woodchucks, and the Loggers would touch him up in the first inning. After retiring all 15 batters he faced in his last start against the Lakeshore Chinooks, the Loggers scored two runs on a single by Jimmy Bosco to take a 2-0 lead. Bosco would then steal second base and score on a single by Brandon Bednar as the Loggers jumped out to a 3-0 lead.After three shutout innings by Logger starter Alex Gunn, the Woodchucks would get on the board in the fourth.
Madison Carter led the inning off with a double and would later score on a base hit by Eric Filia-Snyder, cutting the Loggers' lead to two runs.Stadler settled down after the first, not allowing another hit until the fifth inning. With the bases clear and two outs, Matt Chapman blasted his seventh home run of the season to left field to put the Loggers on top 4-1.
Stadler recorded his longest outing of the season as he went five and one third innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, while striking out a season-high eight batters.Gunn would leave the ballgame after six solid innings with his team leading 4-1. Gunn went six innings allowing only one run on five hits and eight strikeouts.Immediately after Gunn's departure, the "ËChucks would take advantage of the Logger bullpen.
Left-hander Michael Wills allowed a lead-off double to Brendon Hayden, Hayden's 18th double of the season. Joe Serrano reached on an error by the shortstop, Chapman, advancing Hayden to third. Serrano then stole second in front of a two-run single by Matt Richer cutting the Logger lead to a single run.After trailing for the entire series, the Woodchucks would take their first lead in the eighth inning. With Filia-Snyder on third and Hayden on second and two outs, the Loggers brought in their closer, Jonathan Van Eaton.
After Van Eaton got ahead of Joe Serrano 1-2, Serrano blooped a ball down the right field line past the right fielder Bosco. Filia-Snyder and Hayden both scored, Serrano went to third with a two-out, go-ahead, two-run single to give the "ËChucks a late 5-4 lead.The Loggers would come right back to take the lead in the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out, Tyler Servais lined a ball down the first base line, scoring Tyler Kuresa and Austin Bailey and giving the Loggers a 6-5 lead.
The Loggers would go on to push across three more runs as they mounted a 9-5 lead. After Van Eaton came back on and retired the Woodchucks 1-2-3 in the ninth, the Loggers secured the 9-5 victory to complete the three-game sweep.
The Woodchucks will head to Madison tomorrow to take on the Mallards for a three-game set, with the third game at Athletic Park on Sunday at 5:05 for Fan Appreciation Night. The "ËChucks will face the Loggers again in the first round of the Northwoods League playoffs, which begin on Monday night at Athletic Park.
