Bloomington Extreme News Release
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Bloomington Extreme indoor football coach Ted Schmitz announced Thursday that kicker Peter Christofilakos has signed a contract with the Arizona Rattlers of the top-level Arena Football League.
Schmitz said that former Normal resident and University of Illinois kicker Doug Higgins has been activated and will handle the kicking duties in Saturday's 7 p.m. United Indoor Football League game against RiverCity at Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo.
Christofilakos and defensive lineman Quince Holman, who begins camp with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League later this month, were placed on the Extreme's exempt list. The move allows the players to return to the Extreme if they are released by their current teams.
The Extreme also announced the signing of offensive lineman Chad Walker and the waiving of defensive back Greg McKinstry, who has a three-day tryout with the Fort Wayne Fusion of the af2.
Higgins, who played high school football at Normal Community and now resides in Lexington, finished his career at Illinois in 1990 third in career-points with 230 and fourth in field goals made with 39. He was a four-year letterman and a second-team Big Ten Conference selection his senior year.
Christofilakos, also a former University of Illinois kicker, was a second-team UIF selection last year after making 31 of 61 field goal attempts. He led the team in scoring with 144 points.
This season Christofilakos has made 2 of 14 field goal attempts with all but one attempt coming from 40 yards or beyond. He set a club record with a 51-yard field goal earlier in the season.
The 6-foot-5, 325-pound Walker completed his career at Western Illinois University last season and earned second-team Gateway Conference honors. He started 11 games at offensive tackle.
Walker, a native of Peoria, was a four-year starter at Western Illinois and was a teammate of Extreme players Reggie Gray, Luke Wickman and Steve LaFalce at WIU.
Tickets for all Extreme games are on sale at the Coliseum box office, 101 S. Madison Street, Bloomington. They also may be purchased by calling 309-434-2679; 866-891-9992 or going to the team web site at www.bloomingtonextreme.com or www.uscellularcoliseum.com.
