West Texas Roughnecks News Release
ODESSA, TX. : The Odessa Roughnecks announced Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 that they have re-signed Chris Williams to return as Head Coach for the 2009 season. Williams is coming off a 2008 season in which he led Odessa into the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season. The Roughnecks defeated the Frisco Thunder (67-33) in the first round of the 2008 playoffs and fell just short of the Intense Bowl with a 59-57 loss to the Louisiana Swashbucklers in the semi-finals.
Williams will be returning for his 6th season with the Roughnecks organization. During that time he has led Odessa to a rare undefeated regular season in 2005 and an IFL championship in 2006. Williams holds a 43-22 regular season record (48-26 overall) during his time in Odessa. Williams has stayed very productive while serving double-duty as offensive coordinator. He has twice led Odessa to record setting offensive performances. A 90-40 victory over San Angelo in 2004 and a 97-56 victory over Corpus Christi in the 2006 Intense Bowl, both setting IFL scoring records. Odessa has averaged 50 points or more scored a game in each of its first five seasons.
"It has been a remarkable experience to have been the Head Coach of the Odessa Roughnecks for five years. I can only hope that for my sixth year, after the changes we have gone through, I can help lead the Roughnecks back to another championship." stated Head Coach Chris Williams.
The Mobile, Alabama native began his coaching career with the Birmingham Steeldogs and shortly after, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers of the AF2. Williams has not only built a long track record for winning in indoor football, but for moving players up the higher ranks of professional football. His efforts in recruiting top prospects for the Roughnecks in the pre-season and promoting his players in the off-season have made Williams one of the most notable developers of young talent.
"I"m very excited that Coach Williams is back for another season. On a winning basis, he has been one of the most consistent in indoor football. I'm looking forward to the 2009 season."stated Odessa Roughnecks Owner and President of Allegiance Pro Sports, Brandon Smith.
