Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release

WINNIPEG, MB - Receiver Chris Matthews has been named the CFL's Most Outstanding Rookie for the 2012 season after a sensational rookie campaign that saw him start all 18 games and finish the regular season with 81 receptions for 1,192 yards and seven touchdowns.

Matthews became an immediate star this season, recording two 100-yard games within the first three weeks and six 100-yard games overall. He hauled in at least seven catches in five different regular season games and his yardage total was good enough for sixth best in the league along with his 14.7 yards per catch that ranked fourth best among receivers who caught over 60 passes.

Matthews becomes only the sixth Blue Bomber to win this award, following in the footsteps of Bomber greats Joe Poplawski (1978), William Miller (1980), Michael Richardson (1992), Albert Johnson III (2000) and Gavin Walls (2005). The last Blue Bomber to be up for this award was defensive back Jonathan Hefney in 2009.

Matthews also became the first rookie receiver in franchise history to record 1,000 yards receiving in a single-season.

Matthews beat out BC Lions' defensive lineman Jabar Westerman for the award.
