Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN, MS --- You can add one more home game and two more regular season games to the Mississippi RiverKings' schedule in the Central Hockey League (CHL) this year. The RiverKings and the CHL today (July 14th, 2010) jointly announced that a 66-game regular season schedule will be used for the upcoming season. The CHL has also announced a new, revamped playoff format for determining the league champion at the end of the year.

The 66-game regular season schedule adds two games for CHL teams taking part in the affiliation with franchises coming from the International Hockey League (IHL). The IHL teams under the affiliation will play four fewer games than they previously did under a 70-game schedule.

The 2010-2011 CHL regular season schedule will operate from October 15th, 2010 to March 27th, 2011.

The schedule, details of which will be announced in the near future, will consist of 33 home dates and an equal number of road dates for each team, who this week were divided into conferences reflecting the North and South halves of the CHL footprint. The RiverKings this year are members of a soon-to-be named conference with rivals from the southern half of the league.

Under the new playoff format, a total of 16 teams will compete for the Ray Miron President's Cup post-season championship, with the top eight teams from each conference earning playoff tickets. The eight teams in each conference will be seeded according to point totals with the conference champion receiving the number one seed and on through to number eight.

The playoffs will consist of four rounds, conference quarter-finals, conference semi-finals, conference finals, and the league championship series.

The conference quarter-finals and conference semi-finals will be a best-of-five series. The conference finals and league championship series will be best-of-seven series.

The brackets for the post-season will remain constant with no re-seeding of teams taking place during the playoffs.

Winners of each conference quarter-final series will advance to the conference semi-finals, which will also be a best-of-five series. The victorious teams from each conference semi-final series will move on to their respective conference final series, which will be determined through a best-of-seven series format. The remaining two conference champions will play for the CHL league championship, also in a best-of-seven series.

Home ice advantage for each series will be determined by the teams' respective point totals at the end of the regular season. The home ice advantage for the league championship series will also determined by the competing teams' point totals at the end of the regular season, not by their seeding into the post-season.

The new playoff format eliminates the previously used best-of-three first round series, when ten teams advanced to the post season in the CHL.

If tiebreakers are needed to determine home ice advantage or team seeding in the playoffs, they will first go on the basis of most wins, followed by head-to-head record, and lastly on regular season goals for-goals against differential.

Your Mississippi RiverKings are gearing up for another exciting season of hockey in the Mid-South, the team's 19th year in the Central Hockey League, with the team's first home game set for Saturday, October 16th at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven.
