Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
CARSON, Calif. (Sunday, March 9, 2014) - Chivas USA announced today that the club has signed Missouri State University goalkeeper Trevor Spangenberg. The 22-year-old earned the final roster spot among the goalkeeping group after a strong and steady performance in the Red-and-White's preseason training camp in Tucson, Ariz.
"We are very excited to have Trevor join our team," expressed Chivas USA Goalkeeper and Assistant Coach Paul Grafer. "We brought him in as a trialist during preseason and he proved to be at a very high level. His mentality was very professional, and we liked his steadiness and composure in goal. Every team is only as good as its depth and we need three very talented goalkeepers on our roster in order to make it through a demanding MLS season. He is a competitor and will be challenging our two other goalkeepers for playing time."
Spangenberg enjoyed a stellar career at Missouri State University, where he finished his senior year as the school's all-time career leader in goals against average (0.67). Playing every minute in goal last season for the Bears, the netminder recorded a school-record seven-straight clean sheets and tied a school-best mark with 11 shutouts, while leading his side to a 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Championship. Spangenberg was a fixture for a defense that ranked third in the nation for lowest goals against average (0.41), which earned the 6-foot-2 keeper First Team All-Conference honors along with an NSCAA's NCAA Division 1 Men's All-Midwest Region Third Team selection.
Chivas USA completed their final preparations on Saturday ahead of their 2014 Regular-Season opener against the Chicago Fire on Sunday beginning at noon (PT) at the StubHub Center. The match will be nationally televised on UniMas and can also be heard in Spanish on season partner ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM with Mario Amaya handling the play-by-play commentary. Tickets to the Red-and-White's opener are available for purchase at www.cdchivasusa.com/tickets or by calling 1-877-CHIVAS1.
