Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
HARRISON, N.J. (Sunday, March 30, 2014) - Chivas USA (1-1-2) secured a road point Sunday afternoon with a 1-1 tie against the New York Red Bulls (0-1-3) led by striker Erick "Cubo" Torres' league-leading fourth goal of the season. NYRB forward Peguy Luyindula would tally the equalizer for the home side in stoppage time. With the result, the Red-and-White ran their unbeaten streak against New York to five-straight games. In addition, with his start in goal Sunday, Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy is now the club's second all-time leader in games played with 115 appearances.
The Rojiblancos came out fast from the opening whistle looking to go at goal and managed to get into dangerous spaces in their attacking third. Torres attempted to set up rookie Thomas McNamara with a quick touch into the right side of the box after receiving a pass with his back to goal from midfielder Mauro Rosales, but Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles came off his line in time to break up the threat.
Chivas continued to get numbers into the box and opened up the scoring in the 25th minute after being awarded a penalty kick. After Torres unleashed a strike from about 25 yards out, Rosales recovered the deflection and worked the ball into the right side of the box to send a cross into the short area. As McNamara made his run to get on the end of the pass, he was taken down from behind by defender Richard Eckersley. A minute later, Torres placed his penalty shot calmly down the middle of the goal as Robles anticipated wrong and dove to his left to record his 11th goal in 19 career games.
The Goats threatened to add to their lead in the 51st minute off a corner kick by Rosales from the left side. After the initial entry was cleared, Chivas followed up with two consecutive strikes from inside the box that were turned away by the New York defense.
The Red Bulls began to pressure in their attacking third and generated promising looks, but Kennedy and the Red-and-White defense remained stout to preserve the one-nil advantage. In the 73rd minute, Kennedy had the save of the match when he faced Bradley Wright-Phillips in a one-on-one breakaway. The forward took control of the ball after Thierry Henry played a dummy ball to allow him to push the ball with only the netminder remaining, but Kennedy came off his line and closed in on the attack to deny the possible equalizer with his kick save near the penalty spot.
Kennedy again came up with a huge stop in the 82nd minute when midfielder Dax McCarty sent a sinking first-time volley from outside the box that was on frame toward the upper left corner of the goal. However, the Red-and-White keeper turned away the strike with a leaping right-handed swat.
The home side would go on to equalize, however, in the fourth minute of stoppage time when Luyindula got on the end of Eric Alexander's corner kick with a header that found the back of the net inside the right post for the sides to split the points at Red Bull Arena with the 1-1 final.
Chivas USA now return home to begin preparations for the first leg of the SuperClásico against cross-hall rival LA Galaxy on Sunday, April 6, starting at noon (PT). The match will kick off the three-match derby and will be televised nationally on UniMas. For more information follow the club on Twitter and Facebook.
