Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
CARSON, Calif. - Chivas USA fell at home, 2-1, to Seattle Sounders FC Saturday night at the StubHub Center. The Rojiblancos took the initial lead in the first half on striker Erick "Cubo" Torres' league-leading sixth goal of the season. Seattle, however, responded with two unanswered goals by Lamar Neagle and Obafemi Martins to secure the road result while Chivas was forced to finish the final part of the conference showdown a man down.
The Red-and-White took the early advantage after midfielder Leandro Barrera was taken down by Osvaldo Alonso inside the left corner of the box in the fourth minute as he looked to get on the end of Marco Delgado 's threaded pass attempt. A minute later, Torres calmly placed his shot past Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei's left.
Seattle evened the match in the 24th minute when Neagle was able to knock in his shot from inside the six-yard box after Clint Dempsey flicked a pass back after the ball came loose inside the box on the end of a free kick sent in from the right seam by Gonzalo Pineda.
Chivas managed to get into range in their attacking third and got off a pair of clean strikes from outside the box by Torres and Eric Avila in the 36th and 40th minute, respectively. Two minutes later, Mauro Rosales fired directly to goal on a free kick spotted about 20 yards out on the left seam. The shot was on frame to find the inside of the back post, but Frei batted the attempt away and two consecutive Red-and-White follow-up shots were then deflected inside the box to prevent the go-ahead tally.
In the final minute of the half, midfielder Carlos Alvarez played a chip to Rosales and set up the attacker on the right side of the box. Rosales then sent a low cross toward the edge of the six-yard box where Torres was making his cut, but Frei arrived in time to secure the threat and keep the match locked at one heading into halftime.
Delgado attempted to put the Goats back up in the 54th minute with a one-time volley after a Chivas corner kick was headed outside of the box by the visiting side, but the right-footed shot sailed over the crossbar.
Chivas USA were left with 10 men after Delgado was sent off with a straight red in the 73rd minute. The Sounders made the most of the disadvantage to claim the 2-1 lead in the 81st minute on Martins chip shot from inside the box assisted by Dempsey.
The Rojiblancos had a dangerous look at delivering the equalizer in the 87th minute when Luke Moore was slotted a pass as he made his run inside the box. The striker - who came on as a sub a minute earlier - was left in a one-on-one with Frei, but his shot deflected off the netminder, as the Red-and-White were unable to pull even in the 2-1 contest.
Chivas USA will close out their current four-game stretch against conference opponents when they travel to face the San Jose Earthquakes next Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium. The match will mark the first leg of the three-match season series and can be heard live on ESPN Deportes Radio KWKW 1330 AM.
