Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
CARSON, Calif. (Tuesday, June 10, 2014) - Chivas USA announced today the club has extended the loan on the Red-and-White's leading goal scorer, Erick "Cubo" Torres, who will remain with the Goats through the end of the 2014 Major League Soccer season. The club will then have the option to retain Torres' services beyond 2014.
Torres joined Chivas USA via loan from Club Deportivo Guadalajara in July 2013, having an immediate impact with the Rebaño Angelino. The 21-year-old Mexican national stands among the League's scoring leaders with nine goals thus far in the season. Since his arrival, the forward has amassed a total of 16 tallies in 29 appearances and is tied with Cuauhtémoc Blanco as the League's all-time leading scorer among Mexican-born players.
In his first MLS season, the Guadalajara product earned Chivas USA's Golden Boot Award with seven tallies and was recognized as the Latino de la Jornada (MLS Latino Player of the Week) honors on two occasions. His superb bicycle kick in the Goats' September road match at Vancouver Whitecaps FC earned "Cubo" a Goal of the Year nomination.
A Chivas Guadalajara product, Torres made his professional debut with the Mexican First Division club in 2010 at the age of 17, recording 14 goals in nearly four seasons with the Rebaño Sagrado. In 2012, the young forward participated in the prestigious Copa Libertadores as well as the CONCACAF Champions League. Torres was also part of Guadalajara's Under-20 team that was crowned champion in 2013.
On the international level, Torres was part of Mexico's U-20 National Team in the 2011 World Cup, where the center forward helped lead El Tri to a historic third-place finish in Colombia.
Torres and Chivas USA now turn their attention to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, as they travel to North Carolina to face the Carolina RailHawks as they begin their tournament run in the Fourth Round. The match will mark the club's second consecutive meeting in Cup play over the last two years and will kick off at 5 p.m. (PT) at WakeMed Soccer Park on Saturday.
