Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
CARSON, CA - Chivas USA played the Portland Timbers to a 1-1 draw Saturday night at the StubHub Center to extend their unbeaten run to six out of the last seven home matches. The Rojiblancos took the advantage in the first half on Bryan de la Fuente's header and Timbers were able to pull one back to equalize early in the second half with Diego Valeri's score from outside the box for the sides to come away with a point apiece.
The Red-and-White had the first dangerous look at opening the scoreboard just two minutes into the match when midfielder Eric Avila got deep into the box near the end line and sent a low cross through the short area, but the pass went through untouched. The Goats continued to get numbers forward and into range throughout the half, as Oswaldo Minda sent a long ball over the top and into the box, which Erick Torres headed back to a trailing Edgar Mejia who got off a clean shot that was pushed wide left of the post.
Chivas went up 1-0 in the 23rd minute when left back Carlos Borja worked the ball into the attacking third and sent a cross from the left seam that De la Fuente was able head in for his second goal of the season past Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts toward the upper-right corner of the net.
The Timbers evened the score in the 50th minute on Valeri's strike from behind the 18-yard line after Jose Valencia played the midfielder a pass from inside the box, which he was able to power toward the back of the net.
Locked in a 1-1 tie, the Red-and-White went to their bench and brought on forward Matthew Fondy to make his home debut and work alongside Torres up top. The Rojiblancos found themselves with a golden opportunity to reclaim the lead in the 68th minute when De la Fuente sent a long ball over the top to Torres who was onside down the middle of the field. While Torres adjusted to bring the ball down, Ricketts came far off his line to meet the play and break up the threat.
Chivas continued to get into dangerous spots in and around the box to generate threats, as Mejia threaded a pass from the right wing into the box to a cutting Fondy in the 73rd minute. The forward then turned and tried to cross it into the short area, but Portland's defense was able to break up the run. The Goats brought on their final two subs beginning in the 77 minute and had the match's last look at tallying the game-winner, when Tristan Bowen found enough space to get off a shot from inside the box, but the attempt sailed high and the result remained locked at one.
Chivas USA now travel to the Lone Star State to battle Eastern Conference side the Houston Dynamo on Saturday, Sept. 21, at BBVA Compass Stadium. The match will mark the only meeting between the clubs this season beginning at 5:30 p.m. (PT) and will be televised in English on KDOC-TV and in Spanish on MundoFOX 22. The game can also be heard in Spanish on W Radio 690 AM. For more information visit cdchivasusa.com and follow us on Twitter @cdchivasusa and Facebook.com/chivasusa.
