Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Sunday, May 11, 2014) - Striker Erick "Cubo" Torres' eighth goal of the season and midfielder Marvin Chavez 's brace in his Red-and-White debut propelled Chivas USA to a 3-1 road win over the Colorado Rapids Sunday afternoon at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Torres put the Rojiblancos up with his second-half header and Chavez followed with his first and second tallies of the season. Deshorn Brown scored Colorado's lone goal in stoppage time to spoil the clean sheet.

Additionally, with his Week 10 start, goalkeeper Dan Kennedy now holds Chivas USA's all-time record for career starts with 118 after surpassing former club standout Jonathan Bornstein.

Chivas looked to get numbers forward despite the snowy conditions and began getting crosses into the box beginning in the 12th minute. Right back Eric Avila managed to play a diagonal cross from the right seam but the home side was able to clear the entry. Two minutes later, midfielder Leandro Barrera got around his marker on the left wing to send a low cross from outside of the box, but once again Colorado's back line was able to turn away the threat.

The Rapids began to turn the momentum in their favor mid-way through the first half and got into range in their attacking end for a number of strikes. Kennedy, however, was stout in goal and denied a pair of shots that were on frame to send the conference showdown into the half locked at zero.

In the 49th minute, midfielder Martin Rivero - who was making his first start for the Goats - looked to find Torres in space in the final third with a long through-ball. The pass was too long, though, and Colorado keeper Clint Irwin was able to collect the low service.

The Rivero to Torres combination would not be denied in the 56th minute, as the midfielder sent a diagonal cross from the right seam to link up with Torres just outside the six-yard box. The 21-year-old striker drilled the entry passed Irwin's right with a first-time header to put Chivas up 1-0.

Chivas USA doubled their lead in the 67th minute when Chavez took control of a pass from Torres inside the Goats' defensive half of the field and then headed the ball to himself to begin a sprint into the attacking third in a one-on-one breakaway against Irwin. The midfielder - who came on as a sub in the 57th minute - chipped his goal over the netminder once he crossed the edge of the 18-yard box.

Chavez then capped off his debut when took control of a poorly attempted back pass by Colorado and found the inside of the left post with his second chip shot over Irwin when the keeper was forced to come off his line. The tally put the exclamation point on Chivas' three-goal performance and secured the squad's first road and conference victory of the season.

In stoppage time, Brown was able to get off a shot from the left side of the box that was deflected by a Red-and-White defender. The sinking strike had enough behind it to find the inside of the right post for the home side to pull one back in the eventual 3-1 result.

Chivas USA will now begin preparations to face their second consecutive conference road test when they travel to battle FC Dallas next Saturday at Toyota Stadium. The match will mark the second leg of the season series and can be heard on ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM. For more information visit cdchivasusa.com and follow the club on Twitter and Facebook .
