Chivas USA Acquires Salvadoran International Osael Romero

CARSON, Calif. (Monday, February 1, 2010) - Chivas USA announced on Monday that it has acquired Osael Romero, El Salvador's star 23-year-old midfielder who has made 37 appearances for his country. Romero, who is on loan from Vista Hermosa in El Salvador, will join the Red-and-White in preseason in the next two weeks and will be included on the roster pending receipt of his ITC and Visa. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Chivas USA acquired the rights to Romero from FC Dallas, who held a discovery claim on the player, in exchange for allocation money.

"Osael is a perfect fit for our club this season, and we're excited to have him at Chivas USA," said Head Coach Martín Vásquez. "He's a young, talented player, and we've all seen his accomplishments with the El Salvador National Team. We look forward to having him play a big part for us in 2010."

"I'm happy to have this opportunity with Chivas USA," said Romero. "I'm looking forward to the challenge of playing in MLS, which is a very competitive league. I'm familiar with the Los Angeles area, where I had the opportunity to score with the El Salvador National Team in tough international matches. At just 23 years of age, Romero has already become the star of the El Salvador National Team. In 37 appearances for his country, Romero has scored eight goals from an attacking midfield position, including several of the team's most important goals in 2009. Five of his goals have also been scored in the Los Angeles area; one in a Feb. 6, 2009 friendly against Peru at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, two in a 3-1 friendly victory over Ecuador on May 27, 2009, also at the Coliseum, and two in the 2-1 Gold Cup win over Costa Rica on July 3, 2009.

"Osael is an exceptional player, and his presence will be great for our club both on and off the field," said Chivas USA President and CEO Shawn Hunter. "He can make the difference as a player, and his importance for his National Team will help us connect with Salvadoran fans across Southern California."

Romero joins Chivas USA on loan from Salvadoran club Vista Hermosa, where he has started since joining the club in 2006. The cagey midfielder started his professional career with Atlético Chaparratique of Moncagua, near his hometown of Usulután. He was a member of the El Salvador Under-20 National Team in 2004-05, and made his debut with the full national team on October 13, 2007 against Costa Rica.

Preseason for the Red-and-White is now underway, with the team going through daily practices at The Home Depot Center. The 2010 regular season kicks off for Chivas USA when the team hosts the Colorado Rapids on Friday, March 26 at 7:30 at The Home Depot Center, and season seats, starting at just $10 per game, are available now at 1-877-CHIVAS-1 and cdchivasusa.com.
