Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release

CARSON, Calif. (Tuesday, July 1, 2014) - Chivas USA announced today that the club has acquired midfielder Nathan Sturgis from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for midfielder Carlos Alvarez. The 26-year-old player will be available to suit up for the Red-and-White as they visit the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday at Buck Shaw Stadium.

"Nathan is a very experienced player at the prime of his MLS career," said Chivas USA Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera. "I had the chance to meet him and work with him during my time in Colorado, and he was one of the top players on our squad. He's a very technical and smart midfielder with great vision and good touches and I'm confident that he will help us improve our team at all levels. As a player, as a person and as a leader in the locker room."

Sturgis returns to Los Angeles, where he made his Major League Soccer debut in 2006 after being selected 12th overall by the LA Galaxy in that year's SuperDraft. Since then, the Clemson University product has registered 111 appearances and tallied five goals and four assists after stints with six different MLS clubs (Colorado Rapids, 2013-'14; Houston Dynamo, 2012; Toronto FC, 2011; Seattle Sounders FC, 2009-'10; Real Salt Lake, 2007-'08; LA Galaxy, 2006-'07).

As a member of the Sounders, the St. Augustine, Fla. native helped the Emerald City club conquer back-to-back U.S. Open Cup titles beginning in 2009. Followed by brief stints with Toronto FC, where they won the Canadian Championship, and the Houston Dynamo, Sturgis joined the Rapids during the 2012 off-season, becoming an instrumental part in the team's run to the 2013 MLS Playoffs with 25 games played and four goals.

At the international level, Sturgis emerged from the U.S. Youth Program, where he played at the U-17 and U-20 levels. With the U-20 National Team, the midfielder made 40 appearances and participated in two FIFA U-20 World Cups in Canada and the Netherlands.

Chivas USA's mid-week conference showdown against in-state rival San Jose kicks off at 7:30 p.m. (PT) on Wednesday and will mark second leg of the season series. The match will be broadcast live on Time Warner Cable Deportes as well as ESPN Deportes Radio KWKW 1330 AM. For more information visit cdchivasusa.com and follow the club on Twitter and Facebook.
