Lakeshore Chinooks News Release
The Lakeshore Chinooks played two games on Wednesday in a home-and-away doubleheader with the Kenosha Kingfish, and they kept the fun going on Thursday as they were scheduled to play two games with the La Crosse Loggers. That was necessary after fog caused the teams' June 14th game to be postponed with the score 0-0 after the top of the third inning. The Chinooks continued a recent slide, losing both games against the Loggers.
Game One: La Crosse Loggers 9, Lakeshore Chinooks 1
Joe Stoll (Ohio State) was sent to the mound to "start" the game for the Chinooks in the top of the fourth. He quickly ran into trouble, however, allowing the Loggers to break the scoreless tie. Stoll gave up a single to Jordan Pearce (Nevada), and then Keith Skinner (North Florida) reached on an error by second baseman Greg Deichmann (Louisiana State) to put two on with one out. Stoll then let up a three-run home run to Ryan Kirby (San Diego) to make it a 3-0 game.
Stoll came back out for the fifth but still could not figure out the La Crosse offense. He gave up another home run, this time to Mason McCoy (Illinois Central College), a solo shot. The Loggers managed another run in the frame after Brock Lundquist (Long Beach State) doubled and was driven in by Pearce to widen the Chinooks' deficit to 5-0.
Lakeshore had a chance to narrow the game in the bottom of the fifth, putting two runners on with no outs after a Deichmann triple and a Mark Kolozsvary (Florida) walk. However, Kolozsvary was caught stealing and the next two batters were retired to quell the opportunity.
Manager Eddy Morgan went to his bullpen in the sixth, electing to replace Stoll with right- hander Nick Brown (Missouri State). The Loggers could not be stopped, however, as they scored three more runs. Brown allowed the bases to be loaded with no outs and gave up the first run of the inning when McCoy smacked an RBI single. He then walked Jordan Zimmerman (Mesa Community College) to bring in the second run of the frame, and the third and final run came around on a sac fly from Lundquist to make it 8-0.
Parker Sanburn (Arkansas) replaced Brown in the seventh, and the Loggers scored yet another run. This one came after Kirby tripled and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-0. Sanburn did stay for the eighth and ninth innings and managed to keep La Crosse without a run in those frames.
The Chinooks offense scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the ninth. Anthony Massicci (Canisius) singled with two outs, and he was driven in thanks to a Deichmann double.
The team managed seven hits in the game with Jake Romano (Miami-Ohio) being the only player to have a multi-hit day.
Game Two: La Crosse 9, Lakeshore 5 (Seven Innings)
The Chinooks jumped on La Crosse starter Zach Lewis (Wabash Valley College) early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Anthony Massicci (Canisius) singled to begin the frame, and Lucas Raley (Lake Erie College) reached on a single of his own. Both runners were then driven in by Colby Fitch (Louisville), who smacked a base hit down the right field line.
The team came right back into the bottom of the second to widen their lead to 4-0. Andrew Shaps (Arizona State) smacked a single with one out in the frame, and Massicci later walked to put two on with two outs. The big hit came from Zarley Zalewski (Kent State), who doubled to bring home Shaps and Massicci. The team had a chance to really break things open after loading the bases when Raley walked and Doug Kraeger (Richmond) was hit by a pitch, but they stranded all three runners.
The offense kept things going in the third, scoring another run. Greg Deichmann (Louisiana State) reached base thanks to an error from Loggers second baseman Jordan Zimmerman (Mesa Community College). Lakeshore then put runners on first and third when Jake Romano (Miami-Ohio) singled. Deichmann then scored after stealing home. It was not a straight steal, rather he scored when the Loggers tried to pick off Romano and got him into a rundown, but it still gets credited as a steal of home.
The Chinooks sent ace Marshall Kasowski (Houston), who entered play with a 1.39 ERA, to the mound for the start. He looked great for the first four innings, giving up just two hits and holding the La Crosse lineup scoreless. The fifth inning, however, was a different story. Kasowski allowed the bases to be loaded with one out, and the first run of the frame scored on an error from third baseman Zalewski. Kasowski let up an RBI single to Will Savage (Columbia) to make it 2-0, and he was chased from the game when a two-RBI single from Jordan Zimmerman (Mesa Community College) gave La Crosse their third and fourth runs of the inning.
Kasowski was replaced by Jake Tuttle (UW-Milwaukee) with runners on first and third, but the bleeding continued. Tuttle gave up a single to Alex Merritt (North Florida), scoring Savage to tie the game at five runs apiece. Back out in the sixth, Tuttle allowed the go-ahead run on a Mason McCoy (Illinois Central College) RBI triple. Tuttle stayed on for the seventh, letting the game get broken open by giving La Crosse three more runs to make it 9-5.
La Crosse held the Chinooks scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, and with the game being shortened given that the teams already played earlier in the day, that would be Lakeshore's last chance as they fell 9-5. The Chinooks and Loggers will battle again on Friday at Kapco Park. Lakeshore then goes on the road to take on La Crosse again in a two-game series.
