Chiefs top Bruins, 3-1

David Rutherford, J.P. Szaszkiewicz and Seth Compton scored goals and Curtis Kelner had a pair of assists as the Spokane Chiefs earned a 3-1 win on Wednesday night over the Chilliwack Bruins. The Chiefs improved their record to 27-20-3-2 with 59 points and pulled within four points of Tri-City for second place. The Americans were 4-1 losers at Everett on Wednesday and Seattle, now two points behind Spokane in third, lost 3-2 in overtime at Prince George.

David Rutherford scored at 15:50 of the first period on a rebound of a Derek Ryan shot for his 24th of the year, tying him for the team lead with Michael Grabner. Drayson Bowman also assisted on the goal.

The Bruins evened the score at 18:56 of the first on the power play, their only goal in five chances.

Szaszkiewicz scored on a breakaway after he fought past a pair of Bruins at the blueline for his fifth of the year. Jared Spurgeon, playing his first game after missing three with a minor injury, assisted on the play along with Curtis Kelner.

Kelner set up Seth Compton's eighth of the season to give the Chiefs an insurance goal at 8:30 of the third. Evan Haw also had an assist.

Chilliwack outshot Spokane 29-26.

The game was the first of three in four nights in the Spokane Arena. Friday night, Spokane will host the Calgary Hitmen and Tri-City on Saturday.
