Chiefs Swept Up By Cyclones

Johnstown Chiefs News Release

CINCINNATI, Oh. - The Johnstown Chiefs were unable to keep up with the North Division leading Cyclones on Thursday night and fell by a 7-1 score at U.S. Bank Arena.

Cincinnati was looking to earn its fourth consecutive Kelly Cup Playoffs berth on home ice and assumed control of the game with an early goal by Jimmy Kilpatrick. Just 2:20 into the frame, Kilpatrick was able to settle into a soft spot in the Chiefs' defense, took a centering feed from Dustin Sproat, and lifted a wrist shot past John Murray's glove hand. The Cyclones kept the pressure on and at one point held an 8-1 shot advantage. But about halfway through the first, with Cincinnati on a power play, Connor Shields changed the momentum of the game. The Chiefs' leading scorer raced in on a breakaway and sifted a backhand shot past Jeremy Smith to tie the game at 9:45.

Johnstown's success while shorthanded in the first period didn't carry over to the second as a pair of Cincinnati power play goals broke the 1-1 tie. The onslaught began just 1:40 into the frame as Sproat cashed in his 19th of the season followed by Doug Krantz finishing off a 3-on-2 rush at 11:32. The Chiefs were whistled for four penalties throughout the second and greatly helped the Cyclones to a 20-2 shot advantage in the frame. Furthering the advantage was Kilpatrick with his second of the night at 14:24 of the second as he finished off a loose puck on the edge of Murray's crease.

Cincinnati refused to let up in the third period and tacked on three more goals to cruise to the win. Just like the first two frames, the Cyclones were able to cash in before the period grew too old. Scott Reynolds took a nifty feed low on the right wing from Mathieu Aubin and snapped it home 2:26 into the period. Ryan Del Monte added insurance with an unassisted breakaway goal at 11:36, while Sproat closed out the scoring with a shorthanded goal at 19:38.

Murray sustained the loss while making 34 saves. The Chiefs were 0-for-8 on the power play and 6-for-8 on the penalty kill.

Mark your calendars! The Chiefs return to home ice on Friday, March 26 against the Toledo Walleye at 7:05. The Chiefs will be wearing special U.S. Marines themed jerseys for one night only. There will be a silent auction during the game and the winning bidders will get to take home the game-worn jerseys! Don't forget about the Chiefs' great discounts on tickets for groups of 10 or more.
