Chiefs Sweep Twin Bill from IronPigs

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, swept a doubleheader from the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Monday night, winning both games by a 4-0 score. Starters Tommy Milone and Brad Peacock threw five scoreless innings apiece, as the Chiefs improved their record to 8-6 in doubleheader games.

In the first game, Syracuse (63-71) jumped on Lehigh Valley (76-62) starter Scott Mathieson with some early runs. After two fly outs to start the first inning, Matt Antonelli walked and Jesus Valdez lined a double to left field, scoring Antonelli. The double was Valdez' eighteenth of the year.

The Chiefs added a run two innings later in the top of the third, when Roger Bernadina launched a solo home run to right field. Bernadina has now homered in back-to-back games after blasting a solo shot in Saturday's game.

Syracuse plated two more runs in the fifth inning thanks to Antonelli. He crushed an 0-2 pitch from Mathieson over the left field wall for his eighth home run, scoring Steve Lombardozzi to give the Chiefs a 4-0 lead.

Those runs were all that Tommy Milone and Atahualpa Severino would need. Milone retired the game's first thirteen hitters before a one-out single and two two-out walks loaded the bases. But the left-hander retired pinch-hitter Tagg Bozied on a fly out to center field, ending the inning. Atahualpa Severino then tossed two scoreless innings, retiring six out of seven batters to close out the Game One victory.

In Game Two, Syracuse exploded in the first inning with the help of some Lehigh Valley defensive miscues. Bernadina led off the game with a routine fly ball to left field that Dominic Brown dropped. Lombardozzi then singled Bernadina from first to third, putting two runners on base to start the game. IronPigs starter Brian Bass then threw a pickoff attempt to first base away, scoring Bernadina.

Lombardozzi then stole second base and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a Tug Hulett RBI single. After a walk to Seth Bynum, Corey Brown ignited the rally further with a two-run double to the left-center field gap, putting the Chiefs on top by a 4-0 score.

Those four runs were more than enough for starting pitcher Brad Peacock. The 23-year-old tossed five scoreless innings, striking out seven and walking just one. His most frequent strikeout victim was Brown, with Lehigh Valley's left fielder striking out each of his three times at bat.

Rehabbing left-hander Doug Slaten relieved Peacock and tossed a sterling sixth, striking out all three batters he faced. Right-hander Jeff Mandel entered for the ninth, throwing a scoreless frame to end the game.

The Chiefs have their final scheduled off day on Tuesday, before heading to Buffalo for some Thruway Series actions on Wednesday night. The Chiefs and Bisons will start a two-game series at 7:05, with right-hander Brad Meyers scheduled to throw for Syracuse.
