Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs and Chicago Cubs have announced that two Chiefs pitchers have been promoted all the way to Triple-A Iowa. Right-handers Corey Martin and Yohan Gonzalez flew to Des Moines, Iowa early Tuesday and are available for the Cubs' 5:00 p.m. double header against the Oklahoma City Redhawks.
Gonzalez threw a scoreless inning for the Chiefs Monday afternoon against Bowling Green with just a walk allowed. He leaves the Chiefs with a 0-0 record and a team-best 2.15 ERA in 19 outings. He saved three games in as many chances with 22 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings. Gonzalez held Midwest League hitters to a .213 average and was Manager Casey Kopitzkie's best option over the last two months. After posting an ERA of 4.00 in his first five outings, Gonzalez had an ERA of 1.54 in June and just 1.04 so far in six July outings. Since June 16 he has allowed one run in a span of 12 2/3 innings covering nine outings.
Martin returned to the Chiefs on July 9 and appeared in three games going 1-1 with a save and a 15.43 ERA in 2 1/3 innings. Overall on the season he is 2-2 with a save and a 11.45 ERA in 10 Chiefs outings. Martin was much better with the Northwest League Boise Hawks going 0-0 with seven saves and a 1.00 ERA in eight outings. Martin, 24, a native of Yadkinville, NC, was drafted in the 27th round of the 2009 draft out of Western Carolina University in North Carolina. Last season he moved up to Boise July 1 and pitched out of Hawks bullpen 21 times going 2-2 with a 5.21 ERA. Marin went 7-4 as a senior at WCU and struck out 153 batters with 14 victories during 70 career outings. He was named All-Mountain Valley 2A Conference after going 6-1 with 70 K over 45 innings as a senior at Forbush High School in 2005.
This marks the third straight season the Chiefs have sent players directly to Triple-A Iowa. Last season utility player David Macias went from Peoria to Iowa on two different occasions to fill in for injured Cubs. In 2008 shortstop Nate Samson left the Chiefs in late August for Iowa to help the Cubs in a playoff race. The Chiefs will depart for Fort Wayne, Indiana on Wednesday morning to start a three game series with the TinCaps at 7:05 p.m. Eastern time. The road trip also includes the Chiefs first ever trip to Eastlake, Ohio for a three-game series against the Lake County Captains. The Chiefs roster is currently at 23 players.
