Dayton Dragons News Release
DAYTON, OH-Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and the Dayton Dragons will host 16-year-old Kaela Smith during the unique "Home Run for Life" program on Wednesday, July 21, at 7 pm, when the Dayton Dragons take on the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Fifth Third Field.
The "Home Run for Life" program provides citizens of the Dayton region a once-in-a-lifetime experience as they bravely battle serious medical conditions. Each honoree gets to take an honorary home run "lap" around the bases of Fifth Third Field during a sold-out Dragons home game while the crowd provides a standing ovation. Every honoree has received excellent medical attention from their support team, including Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
KAELA'S STORY
At birth, Kaela was diagnosed with spinal bifida, a disease where a bone defect in the vertebral column exposes that part of the spine. At three days old she underwent a surgery to correct her spinal cord.
Since then Kaela has had numerous orthopedic surgeries to correct the alignment of her feet. Through extensive physical therapy and her positive attitude Kaela has improved her ability to walk comfortably and live an active lifestyle.
These days, Kaela keeps busy by focusing on developing her acting skills and maintaining her grades. Kaela is one of the top honor students in her class, and is a member of her high school show choir and vocal assemble. She also takes hip hop classes and vocal lessons on the side. Her dream is to one day become a Broadway star
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and the Dayton Dragons applaud all those who have been instrumental in Kaela's life, including her parents Shelly and Wes Smith, her sisters Madison and Elizabeth, and her medical team from Children's Medical Center. Please join us in cheering on Kaela as she completes her Home Run for Life.
