Peoria Chiefs News Release

The Peoria Chiefs scored twice to tie the game in the eighth, but lost to the Dayton Dragons 3-2 Tuesday afternoon in front of a sellout D.A.R.E Day crowd of 7,869 fans at O'Brien Field. The series, and homestand, will conclude with a Wednesday double-header starting at 5:00 pm.

Dayton was first on the board with a run scored in the third. Kevyn Feiner started the inning when he was hit by a pitch from by Chiefs starter Hung-Wen Chen. A single from Justin Reed brought Feiner around to third, and the run scored on a double play ball off the bat of Brandon Marchaca.

The Dragons extended their lead to 2-0 over the Chiefs when Brandon Waring hit a solo homer out to left field in the fourth, his sixth of the year. The homer was the first surrendered by Chen but the MWL-leading 19th allowed by the Chiefs staff.

The Chiefs threatened in the bottom of the fourth with a double to the left field wall by Josh Donaldson. Kyler Burke advanced Donaldson to third with a fly out to center, but a strikeout by Marquez Smith and a pop out to center from Dylan Johnston ended the inning.

Still trailing 2-0, the Chiefs rallied in the eighth. With one out and Cliff Andersen on first, Marwin Gonzalez singled and Andersen moved to third. Leon Johnson was plunked by Jeremy Horst to load the bases. Nate Samson came through for the Chiefs with a single up the middle as both Andersen and Gonzalez scored to tie the game 2-2. Dayton then intentionally walked Donaldson to reload the bases. Joe Krebs relieved Horst and got Kyler Burke to pop-up for the second out. Marquez Smith then bounced out to short to end the inning with the game tied.

Waring wasted little time in regaining the lead for Dayton. On the second pitch of the ninth inning from Zach Ashwood, Waring blasted a solo homer into the center field berm for a 3-2 Dayton lead. Waring is now second in the MWL with seven homers on the season.

Peoria tried to rally against Krebs in the ninth but fell short. With one out, Jovan Rosa doubled to center before Andersen struck out swinging. Gonzalez then ripped a line drive down the third base line that appeared to be enough to tie the game. However, Dragons third baseman Angel Canbrera made a spectacular diving catch into foul territory to end the game.

Chen pitched five innings for the Chiefs giving up one run and three hits while striking out three. Ashwood (0-4) takes the loss in his second relief outing of the season. The lefty allowed one run and four hits over four innings while striking out two.

Player of the Game - Nate Samson (SS) - Samson singled in the first and then drove home two runs in the eighth with a bases-loaded single. Nate finished the game 2-for-4 with both Chiefs RBI on the day.
