Chiefs Open Camp This Week

Seventy players will converge on the Spokane Arena this week with the hopes of leaving an impression on scouts for one of the coveted spots in the Annual Red-White Scrimmage on Sunday afternoon. The Chiefs Annual Fall Camp will begin with ice sessions on Thursday morning at the Spokane Arena. Camp will conclude on Sunday at 1:00 PM with the Red-White Scrimmage.
Seventeen veterans off last year's playoff roster will be attending camp including 20-year-olds James Reid, Tyler Johnson and Levko Koper.
Defenseman Jared Cowen, the Ottawa Senator's first round selection in 2009, will not be attending Chiefs camp as he is already with the NHL team preparing for their camp. Cowen is eligible to return to play in Spokane as a 19-year-old.
Also in town is 17-year-old Marek Kalus from the Czech Republic. The forward will join Dominik Uher, who returns for his second season in Spokane, as the two European players on Spokane's roster this season. Kalus was Spokane's first round selection, 49th overall, in this summer's CHL Import Draft.
A full week will begin on Tuesday when veterans check in at the Arena. Rookies report and fitness testing takes place on Wednesday.
Scrimmages will begin on Thursday and run at the same times on Friday and Saturday. Three former Chief Captains will be honored as the participating teams will carry their namesake throughout the camp. Teams Cote, Klemm and Sawyer will play in three games each day with scrimmages taking place at 10:30, 1:00 and 3:30. All scrimmages will be free and open to the public.
Brandin Cote (1997-2002 - captain from 2000-02), Jon Klemm (1988-91 - captain of the 1991 Memorial Cup Champions) and Kevin Sawyer (1992-95, captain in 1994-95) were all named to the organization's Top 25 Chiefs in 25 Years last season.
The Red-White game will also be free and open to the public.
