Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost another 13-inning marathon on Monday afternoon in a 2-1 defeat against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. Former Chief Justin Maxwell lined a walkoff home run off Syracuse reliever Jeff Mandel in the bottom of the 13thto give the Yankees the victory.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (12-6) jumped on the board first in the fifth inning. Ramiro Pena doubled to center field with one out and advanced to third base on a Greg Golson fly out. Kevin Russo then scored Pena on a ground ball to deep third base. The run was the only blemish on Ross Detwiler's afternoon. The Syracuse lefthander scattered eight hits and two walks in six and one-third innings, allowing just the one run and striking out five.
It only took a half inning for Syracuse (7-11) to answer back as Bynum launched his second home run in as many games and third overall to left-center field. Bynum leads the Chiefs with three long balls and 11 RBI.
The next five innings yielded no score as both relief corps shut out the opposing lineups until Maxwell's home run in the 13th. Adam Carr, Josh Wilkie, Henry Rodriguez, and Mandel tossed six and one-third innings of shutout ball before Maxwell's two-out home run to right field on a 2-1 pitch.
The Chiefs return to Alliance Bank Stadium next for the first of an eight-game homestand. Syracuse battles the Toledo Mud Hens at 6:00 on Tuesday night. Righthander J.D. Martin will make his second start of the season against Mud Hens lefthander Charlie Furbush.
