Chiefs Down to Eight Defensemen After Gallagher Reassigned

January 8, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Spokane Chiefs announced on Tuesday that defenseman Luke Gallagher has been reassigned and is expected to report to the Trail Smoke Eaters of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL).

"With our numbers on defense following the return of our (World Junior Championship) players, it was clear that we needed to make a move," said Chiefs general manager Scott Carter. "This will allow Luke to get more ice time and play a bigger role. We expect to bring him back as an 'AP' for the playoffs.

"We look forward to watching Luke continue to develop and wish him the best in Trail this season."

Gallagher will remain on the Chiefs' 50-man protected list and be eligible to return to the Chiefs as an Affiliated Player following the conclusion of the Smoke Eaters' season. In WHL 22 games this season, the 18-year-old Spokane native recorded two assists and a +1 rating.

The roster move, along with the reassignment of underage rookie defenseman Graham Sward, puts the Chiefs at 23 players, including 13 forwards, eight defensemen and two goalies.
