Chiefs Down Bisons 7-1 As Strasburg Wins Triple-A Finale

Buffalo, N.Y. - In the Triple-A finale for Stephen Strasburg, the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, defeated the Buffalo Bisons by a 7-1 final. Strasburg pitched five scoreless innings to pick up the win and three Syracuse players hit two-run home runs on Thursday afternoon.

Syracuse (32-21) opened the scoring with two runs in the third inning. After Pedro Lopez and Strasburg struck out to being the frame, Boomer Whiting reached on a bunt single. Pete Orr followed and hit his seventh home run of the season, a two run blast, to put Syracuse in front 2-0.

In the fifth, pinch hitter Kevin Mench singled off of Buffalo starter Dillon Gee (6-1) with one down. He advanced to second on an error by first baseman Mike Jacobs and moved to third on a walk to Orr. Chase Lambin scored Mench with a groundout back to the pitcher Gee.

Buffalo (30-24) allowed two more runs to score in the sixth inning. Chiefs catcher Devin Ivany hit his first Triple-A home run, a two run shot, off the left field foul pole to increase the lead to 5-0 after six innings.

The Chiefs hit their third home run of the afternoon in the seventh inning when with Whitesell on base and no out, Chris Duncan hit an opposite field homer to left for his sixth of the season. The Syracuse lead was pushed to 7-0 after that at bat.

The lone Buffalo run came in the bottom of the eighth off of Chiefs reliever Collin Balester. It was the first run he has surrendered in three relief appearances since returning from the disabled list.

Strasburg (4-1) earned the win pitching five innings, giving up three hits, and striking out five. He is scheduled to make his next start on June 8th for the Washington Nationals against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

On Friday, the Chiefs return home to start a four game series with the Durham Bulls. Scheduled pitchers are Matt Chico for Syracuse and Jeremy Hellickson for Durham. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
