Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs won their third straight game on Friday afternoon as starting pitcher Kurt Heyer shut down the Cedar Rapids Kernels in a 4-1 victory in front of a season-high 5,240 fans. The win moves the Chiefs back over .500 at 7-6 and they go for the sweep of the Kernels on Saturday afternoon.

After the Chiefs left two on base and lost a runner at third in the bottom of the first, Cedar Rapids struck first in the top of the third inning against Heyer. With two down and a runner on first, the Twins 2012 first-round first Byron Buxton tripled off the right-center field wall to put the Kernels on top 1-0.

The Chiefs bounced right back against Hudson Boyd in the bottom of the inning. With one out Ildemaro Vargas reached on an infield single deflected by Boyd and stole second. Alex Mejia tied the game with a single to center and moved all the way to third on the throw home by Buxton. With two down Jordan Walton doubled over the head of right fielder Adam Brett Walker to put the Chiefs on top 2-1. The double extended Walton's hit streak to nine games and was his second two-base hit of the young season.

Heyer took over from there, allowing just two more singles and retiring the final 11 Kernels he faced as the Chiefs built a 4-1 lead. Peoria added the final two runs on the fifth inning on a single by Walton and a sacrifice fly from Jacob Wilson.

Heyer (1-0) earned his first professional win with a career-high seven innings in which he allowed one run on four hits. Heyer did not issue a walk and tied a career-high with eight strikeouts. Zach Petrick allowed three singles in two shutout innings while recording two strikeouts and earning his second save.
