Chico Outlaws News Release
The Chico Outlaws Wednesday continued their winning ways against teams not from Reno, as Brian Kroll led the home team to a 7-2 trouncing of the Fullerton Flyers. Chico has now won five straight games, which ties a franchise record, and the Outlaws are 13-6 this season against Fullerton, Long Beach and San Diego combined. Their season record is now 15-12.
The Reno Silver Sox, who have beaten Chico in six of eight early-season meetings, still hold the top spot in the Golden Baseball League standings, but the Outlaws are gaining ground quickly and have moved into a virtual tie for second place with Long Beach.
As they did on Tuesday, the Flyers were the first to score Wednesday. In the top of the first, Bret Levier was hit by a pitch and advanced on a Todd Gossage error. Levier later scored on Peanut Williams' single that found its way between Gossage and Outlaws shortstop Jesse Kovacs. Williams finished the night 3 for 3 one night after the Outlaws snapped his 13-game hitting streak.
The lead for the visitors was short-lived, though, as the Outlaws responded with Craig Kuzmic's two-run double to right-centerfield in the bottom of the first. Kuzmic struck again in the fourth with another two-run double, and he finished the night 2 for 3 with four RBI. His 12 doubles now lead the Golden Baseball League and his 31 runs batted in are second in the GBL, only behind teammate Mike Mallory's 32.
Kroll got off to a shaky start in the first inning for the Outlaws but was otherwise solid throughout his seven innings of work. He ended up allowing one walk, three hits and two runs. One of those runs was an unearned run. His job wasn't made any easier due to three errors from the Chico defense, but the former Chico State player showed poise in evening his season record at 2-2.
Bobby Gandolfo and Gossage made contributions at the plate for the Outlaws with two hits apiece and both provided run-scoring hits in the four-run fourth inning. Alex Froloff chipped in with a pair of singles as Chico racked up 10 hits on the night.
Starter Jeremy Sugarman (1-3) took the loss for the Flyers, who have dropped five straight and are now 11-15 on the season. Fullerton will travel to Reno for a weekend series with the Silver Sox while the Outlaws will use Thursday's day off to prepare for Friday's series opener against the San Diego Surf Dawgs. First pitch Friday night is scheduled for 7:05 at Nettleton Stadium. Left-hander Grant Gregg (1-2) will take the mound for Chico in game one of the weekend set.
