Yuma Scorpions News Release
CHICO -- In his first career pro start; Tyler Pearson tossed a complete game 4-hit shutout against the high octane Yuma Scorpions, winning 15-0. Pearson needed just 78 pitches to keep the Scorpions off the scoreboard, a feat that hadn?t happened all season.
Pearson was efficient, allowing just four hits and walking none while striking out just one batter. He also benefited from two double plays by the Outlaws? defense.
The game looked to be a pitchers? duel through five innings, but the Outlaws exploded in the 6th inning off starter Steve Soja. After Chico first baseman Jason Van Meetren lined an infield single off Soja?s leg to load the bases, designated hitter Todd Gossage blasted a grand slam over the right-center field wall on the next pitch. Soja got out of the inning, but not after allowing seven runs, all earned.
Right fielder Daniel Nava hit his third home run in the last two games to lead off the second, extending his hitting streak to 10 games. Nava finished the night 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Shortstop Jesse Kovacs went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs to give Pearson more than enough run support.
Every Chico batter scored a run in the game as Yuma pitchers allowed 11 hits, seven walks and hit two batters. Despite the lopsided scoreboard, the game lasted just 2 hours and 19 minutes. The game might have taken under 2 hours if it weren?t for a bizarre pitching carousel late in the game by the Scorpions.
After Brian Swanson, who is listed as an infielder, replaced Soja the Outlaws scored one run off him in the 7th, and he was pulled with one out in the 8th inning. Then reliever Amad Stephens came in and couldn?t keep runners off base, allowing two hits and walking two while getting just one out.
Then pitcher Evan White came in the game ? in left field ? and Jordan Prado moved from shortstop to pitcher and promptly allowed all of Stephens? runners to score while walking two and allowing a hit without recording an out. Then Prado moved back to shortstop and third baseman Henry Calderon moved to the mound and walked in a run and hit a batter before getting center fielder Jason Matteucci to line out to second base, but not before the Outlaws extended their lead to 15 with the 7-run 8th inning.
The game was the first between the teams this season. Chico has now won five in a row and Yuma has dropped five straight. The teams face off again at 7:05 on Tuesday at Nettleton Stadium.
