Chicago Sky Names Stephanie White Assistant Coach

White is recognized as one of the top young assistants in women's basketball, and comes to the Sky after two seasons as assistant coach for the University of Toledo women's basketball team. She played for five years in the WNBA and was named National College Player of the Year in 1999, after leading Purdue to its first NCAA championship.

At the University of Toledo, White has been involved in all aspects of the basketball program, including recruiting, on-floor coaching, scouting, individual workouts and academic support. White also served one season as an assistant coach at Kansas State (2004-05), and one at Ball State (2003-04).

"Stephanie just fits with the Sky," said Bo Overton, head coach and general manager of the Sky. "Her career as an elite college and WNBA player gives her the ability to relate well to players, and she knows how to connect with fans. She has dedicated herself to coaching as a career and her star is rising. She will make huge contributions to the Sky."

White, 29, began her five-year WNBA career with the Charlotte Sting in 1999. She was acquired a year later in an expansion draft by the Indiana Fever to lead the team's inaugural season roster. After four years with the Fever, she ranked third in games played (112) and three point field goals (92), and fourth in scoring (684). She averaged 5.9 points and 2.0 assists per game. White retired after the 2004 season due to injuries.

Prior to joining the WNBA, White played college basketball at Purdue University, and as a senior in 1999 was named the National College Player of the Year, Indiana NCAA Woman of the Year and Big Ten Conference Player of the Year, while leading the Boilermakers to their first NCAA championship. She was a prep star at Seeger High School in West Lebanon, Indiana, and was named Indiana's Miss Basketball in 1995 after finishing her career with the state's single-season scoring record. (more)
