Chicago Stars FC News Release
CHICAGO - The Chicago Red Stars beat the North Carolina Courage for the first time since the 2017 NWSL regular season with a 3-1 victory. Forward Sam Kerr notched a brace with the first and last goals of the match, and the international connection was on full display as the Red Stars struck early on a goal by Kerr, assisted by Yuki Nagasato. Michele Vasconcelos got her second goal of the season to put the Red Stars ahead at the half. Goalkeeper Emily Boyd posted four saves and two punches for Chicago to win her first of the season after facing 16 shots from the Courage.
Key Moments
13th Minute: The international connection is electric again as Nagasato threaded a ball to Kerr who slides it past goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland for the opening goal of the game.
33rd Minute: Forward Lynn Williams equalizes for North Carolina off a shot from up top by defender Merritt Mathias.
40th Minute: Kerr heads a ball to Michele Vasconcelos, and the forward battles off Courage defenders and fires a shot from 20 yards out, sneaking it through the edge of the goal and regain the lead for the Red Stars.
73rd Minute: Debinha was able to beat Chicago defenders to the ball for a header just yards from goal, but Boyd was able to react quickly and parry the ball away. North Carolina attempted to cross the ball towards goal only for Boyd to eliminate the danger.
90th Minute + 3: It's a two-for-one deal as Kerr beats defenders Cari Roccaro and Abby Erceg to send her brace-completing goal over Rowland's shoulder, sealing Chicago's win with a backflip.
