CHICAGO, Ill. - The Chicago Red Stars take down New Jersey/New York Gotham FC by a score of 3-0. Goals from Vanessa DiBernardo, Sarah Luebbert and Ella Stevens secured three points for Chicago and sent them to the top of National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) standings.
KEY MOMENTS:
2' Emily Boyd starts the match off right with a great save, shutting down a shot from outside the box from Gotham
15' Tatumn Milazzo dribbles the ball into Gotham's final third, crosses it into the box and a quick touch from Ella Stevens gets the ball to Sarah Luebbert who scores for the Red Stars
24' Jill Aguilera, Sam Fisher and Milazzo string together some passes in Gotham's territory ending in a goal by Vanessa DiBernardo with an assist from Milazzo
39' Yuki Nagasato shows off her skills and takes a lengthy shot at the goal from outside the box but it's saved by Gotham
61' Boyd's quick reflexes save Chicago again as she stops a Gotham free kick from finding the back of the net
68' Stevens gains possession of the ball right in front of the net and maneuvers herself around to take a shot on goal that goes wide
83' Arin Wright lofts one into the box to Yuki Nagasato, who heads it to Stevens, who shows her dominance in the air again, bringing it down to tally a third goal for the Red Stars
GAME NOTES:
It was another night of firsts for the Chicago Red Stars: Milazzo and Stevens secured their first regular-season assists; Luebbert scored her first regular-season goal; and Channing Foster and Mikenna McManus secured their first regular-season appearances tonight.
The Red Stars' backline, along with goalkeeper Emily Boyd, put up another good defensive performance. Despite being outshot (14 to 10) Chicago's backline kept Gotham off the score sheet, winning possession 37 times between Boyd, Kowalski, Milazzo and Morse. For Boyd, this is the 5th shutout of her career.
Milazzo, who was named to the NWSL's Best XI in June, put in another impressive performance on both ends of the pitch. She ranked in the top five in recoveries (10), completed passes in the final third (4) and shots (1) and chances created (1)
