Chicago Red Stars Defender Markgraf to Miss WPS All-Star Game

Chicago Stars FC News Release

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Chicago Red Stars will be down to three representatives when the 2010 WPS All-Star Game presented by U.S. Coast Guard Reserve takes place this Wednesday.

Red Stars defender and captain Kate Markgraf will not participate in the game. Markgraf, who had been selected as one of four Red Stars reserves for this Wednesday's match, is being held out as she rehabs from a hamstring injury over the weekend. Her status is questionable for this Sunday's WPS match against the Washington Freedom.

Because Markgraf and the Philadelphia Independence's Caroline Seger were late scratches for the WPS All-Star Game, the teams will consist of 17-player rosters.

Chicago will have three players on hand for the WPS All-Star Game -- forward Cristiane, midfielder Karen Carney and goalkeeper Jillian Loyden. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. CT Wednesday at Kennesaw, Ga., and will be televised on Fox Soccer Channel, with a pre-game show starting at 6:30 p.m.

Markgraf has led a Red Stars defense that has allowed a league-low 10 goals through 11 regular-season matches. She missed the inaugural 2009 WPS season while on maternity leave.

On Monday, June 28, the league is holding a WPS All-Star Pick-Em event to determine the starting players for each squad. Live audio of the Pick-Em event starts at 5:50 p.m. CT at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/women-s-professional-soccer and will be hosted by Jeff Kassouf, editor of EqualizerSoccer.com.

The Chicago Red Stars are members of Women's Professional Soccer and play their home games at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill. The Red Stars are playing in their second season in WPS. Red Stars home games for the 2010 WPS season are available through a webcast at www.ChicagoRedStars.com. Their next home match is at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, against the Atlanta Beat.
