WPS to Select 2010 All-Star Teams With Unique Format Monday

June 28, 2010 - Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) News Release

It might be an age old tradition in playground games but Monday will see a historic first for professional sports: Women's Professional Soccer will select its two 2010 WPS All-Star teams on Monday evening when the two All-Star Team captains and their respective coaches take part in a unique 2010 WPS All-Star Pick ‘Em Event to decide their starting eleven live and in-person at STATS sports bar in downtown Atlanta.

The 2010 WPS All-Star Game presented by U.S. Coast Guard Reserve employs an unprecedented format with the 11 starters chosen for each team from among the top 22 highest vote-getters in the All-Star Game balloting through a classic playground pick ‘em. The top two vote-getters in 2010 WPS All-Star voting, Washington Freedom's Abby Wambach and FC Gold Pride's Marta, will serve as team captains and select the rest of their team in consultation with the All-Star head coaches. Wambach will choose "Abby XI" with Philadelphia Independence Head Coach Paul Riley, while Marta will chose "Marta XI" with FC Gold Pride Head Coach Albertin Montoya. Each player will have just 30 tension-filled seconds to make each selection as they put their team together. As top vote-getter, Abby XI will have the first pick.

WPS will offer live audio of the event from Atlanta beginning at 6:50pm ET/3:50pm PT on Monday, June 28 at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/women-s-professional-soccer. "WPS Sunday on FSC" color analyst Jenn Hildreth will emcee the live proceedings and Jeff Kassouf, editor of EqualizerSoccer.com, will call the audio broadcast, announcing the selections and interviewing WPS All-Star coaches and players. The 2010 WPS All-Star Game presented by U.S. Coast Guard Reserve takes place on Wednesday, June 30 at KSU Soccer Stadium in Kennesaw, Georgia. Television coverage begins on Fox Soccer Channel at 7:30pm ET / 4:30pm PT.
