Chicago Stars FC News Release

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Chicago Red Stars of Women's Professional Soccer acquired goalkeeper Allison Whitworth in a trade with the Atlanta Beat, the team announced Friday. Chicago traded its 2012 first- and fourth-round draft picks for Whitworth and Atlanta's 2011 first- and fourth-round draft picks.

The trade was approved by the league Friday, but Whitworth will not accompany the Red Stars for their match against Atlanta on Saturday (6 p.m. CT kickoff, televised live on Comcast SportsNet Chicago).

"From what I have of Allison's play, she's very athletic, with good size, and we're hoping that she brings a high level of competition to our team at the goalkeeper position," Red Stars Head Coach Omid Namazi said.

The Red Stars brought in Whitworth when Chicago backup goalkeeper Kelsey Davis injured her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) last Thursday in training. Davis had surgery earlier this week and is out for the remainder of the 2010 WPS season.

Whitworth had three starts for Atlanta this year, posting a 0-2-1 record. She had a five-save effort to earn a scoreless draw against the Philadelphia Independence in both teams' WPS debuts on April 11. Whitworth saved 22 of 29 shots in her three games.

Whitworth made her WPS debut with FC Gold Pride in 2009. In four starts, she posted a 1-2-1 record, saving 17 of 22 shots and earning a shutout on July 23, 2009 -- a scoreless draw against the Los Angeles Sol. Whitworth's victory came against the Washington Freedom on Aug. 1, 2009, when she made five saves en route to a 3-2 win.

The 24-year-old Whitworth is a Birmingham, Ala., native. She played collegiately at Auburn University, where she set program records with 132 saves during her 2008 senior season and 356 for her career.
