Chicago Fire FC News Release
CHICAGO - Chicago Fire FC today announced that the Club has signed Colombian defender Carlos Terán to a new contract. Terán is now under contract with the Club through the 2026 season with a Club option for 2027.
Terán previously received his U.S. Green Card, granting him permanent resident status in the United States in January 2022, and he will not occupy an international slot on the Fire's roster.
"Over the past year, Carlos has established himself as a competitor and starter for our Club," said Chicago Fire FC Sporting Director Georg Heitz. "His dedication and commitment demonstrate his desire to continue developing, and over time we believe he can be one of the best center backs in the league."
Terán, 22, originally joined the Fire during the 2020 MLS season. With COVID-19 delaying his entry into the United States, Terán featured in just two matches during his first season, making his Chicago Fire debut on Oct. 28, 2020, in the 78th' minute of the team's match against the Philadelphia Union.
Since then, the defender has played in 43 matches (38 starts) and has scored three times for the Fire as a defender. Most recently, Terán was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 5 after the game against Inter Miami FC, where he scored his first goal of the 2023 season and led all field players with eight defensive actions (according to Stats Perform).
At the international level, Terán recently joined the Colombia National Team for a domestic training camp from Oct. 18-20, 2022 in Barranquilla, Colombia. Terán was called to the senior Colombia National Team by head coach Néstor Lorenzo for the first time after having represented Colombia at the U-20 and U-23 levels. In 2019, Terán was named to Colombia's final roster for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland. The defender made an appearance in the group stage, featuring in the 2-0 win against Poland on May 23, 2019. Additionally, he recorded two appearances for the Colombia U-23 team in the 2020 CONMEBOL Olympic qualifying tournament, starting against Argentina on Jan. 19 and playing the full 90 minutes against Uruguay on Feb. 10.
