Springfield Jr. Blues News Release
Tonight we will find out which team has improved the most from our pre-season games in Springfield. The Jr. Blues take on the Chicago Hitmen in the first regular season meeting between the two teams. I think I can safely say that WE WANT A SWEEP! The game time is different tonight as the starting time is 8:00 pm instead of the usual 7:00 pm start time we are all use to.
We have a new addition on this road trip. Barb (my smart, loving, extra charming, best friend wife [did I do good Dear?]) came with the team and me on the bus to the game. This has been a fun weekend for us, and it is enough out of the ordinary that it has made it a lot of fun. Several Parents of the good guys are supposed to be in house this weekend and that is always a good time when Parents can meet Billets and Housing Coordinators. We enjoy the young men who play for the Jr. Blues and they keep us young, and now we get to meet some folks who allow us to "adopt" their boys for awhile.
The most difficult time for me is when we get to the rink early and have to wait, and wait for the guys to take to the ice for warm ups. Then you know that it is almost game time. I've never been a patient "wait-er", and I can hear Barb saying "He isn't a patient person period." At least she isn't up here in the press box while I'm writing this, but rest assured, that is what she would say! And yes, of course it's true...
The Hitmen came out and took advantage of Reid Mimmack's slip in the first minute of the game and tickled the twine at the back of the goal to go up 1 - 0. The Jr. Blues had several excellent chances and opportunities right in front of the goal but just came up short each time and at the end of the first period Chicago continued to lead by the same score. The Blues need to take more face offs, but they continue to fight hard on defense and will get back, I believe, in Period 2. So, as we wait for the teams to return to the ice and start the second period, what's left to say except Let's Go Blues! A good period by the good guys! Ross "the Boss" Andersen scored on a pass from Smilin' Jack Callahan to tie the game early in the second, and the Jr. Blues out shot the Hitmen throughout the second. After two periods the Blues have out shot Chicago 34 to 25. A quick goal for pay back and tough defense has kept the good guys in a position to pounce!
The third period was chaotic and hectic. Chicago scored twice in quick succession and looked like they had put the game away only to have the Jr. Blues come back and score to make it a one goal game, but that was all there was to it. Springfield pulled Reid Mimmack with little time left, but just couldn't put a puck into the back of the net. Final score: Chicago 3 - Springfield 2.
Let's hope the good guys come to play tomorrow night as I think they thought tonight's game was already won before they took the ice for warm ups. Tomorrow night they will be ready to take it to the Hitmen, or the outcome will be the same. So...Let's Go Blues!
