Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers continue the off-season trend of signing players with the last name of "Smith." In the latest move, the Checkers announced they have agreed to terms with the Stoneham, Massachusetts born defenseman, Kenny Smith.
Smith, 6'2, 210 lbs., played in 64 games for the Checkers last season while spending time with both the Providence Bruins and Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League. Smith is thrilled about his return to Charlotte and the potential for success this year, "I had a fantastic time last season. I was excited to hear they wanted me back and I moved on it right away...There is no reason to think we can't have a strong regular season and turn it into a deep run in the playoffs."
Head coach of the Charlotte Checkers, Derek Wilkinson is happy Smith is back in the fold, "Kenny is a very reliable defenseman who is a big part of our team chemistry."
The Checkers enter their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL in October 2007. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers will enter their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena this fall. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $399.
