Chaulk Returns to K-Wings Bench

KALAMAZOO- A day after extending the contract of head coach/director of hockey operations Nick Bootland, the Kalamazoo Wings wasted no time in bringing back the rest of last season's coaching staff by extending the contract of assistant coach Colin Chaulk.

Chaulk, who joined the K-Wings bench staff last season, helped the team to a first place finish in the North Division and a record of 42-22-3-5.

"In my time with the organization, I feel the addition of Colin made our coaching staff the strongest it has ever been," said Bootland. "His dedication to his craft was very evident with his game preparation especially when it came to video breakdown and scouting."

Before joining the coaching ranks, Chaulk played professionally for 15 seasons. In his 909 game professional career, Chaulk played in the top leagues in both North America and Europe, including the original International Hockey League and the American Hockey League.

"Colin made a seamless transition last season from a player to coach," said general manager Jim Burlew. "His knowledge of the game along his ability to relate to the players and work hand-in-hand with Nick Bootland was an integral part of our success on the ice.

Chaulk is no stranger to being a part of championship teams. In his career, Chaulk has helped hoist six championships with the Fort Wayne Komets, with the last one occurring just three seasons ago.

"I was appreciative of a first-class organization like the K-Wings taking the chance on a first year coach," said Chaulk. "I am looking forward to continuing my coaching development with Nick to reach our ultimate goal of capturing the Kelly Cup."

While the native of Toronto, Ontario has always showed a knack for scoring, it is his defensive savvy that garnered the attention of the K-Wings. Last season, Chaulk worked heavily with the K-Wings defensive core.

Chaulk joins Bootland, who is returning for his seventh season behind the K-Wings bench. In his career, Bootland has posted a record of 240-151-19-26 (60.2%) and has guided Kalamazoo to four ECHL North Division crowns, two appearances in the Eastern Conference Finals and a trip to the Kelly Cup Finals.
