
Charron, Pizzutelli join Rampage operations staff

SAN ANTONIO â Sept. 26, 2004 â San Antonio Rampage Director of Hockey Operations Matt Loughran announced today that Florida Panthers Assistant Coach Guy Charron has been named associate coach for the American Hockey League (AHL) club until the NHL season begins. In addition, Panthers' Medical Trainer/Massage Therapist Jim Pizzutelli will assist the Rampage for the same duration. The Rampage is the top Panthers' top affiliate.
This is the 12th season behind the bench for Charron, 55. He spent the past two seasons with the Montreal Canadiens. The 12-year NHL veteran began coaching with the Calgary Flames in 1990 as an assistant for five seasons before joining the Islanders staff for two years. Charron earned the International Hockey League's Coach of the Year Award in 2000 after leading Grand Rapids to a 51-22-0 regular season mark and the Turner Cup Finals. The Verdun, Quebec native also worked as an assistant coach with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim for two seasons (2000-02).
Charron served as assistant coach with the Canadian National team (1985-90) and was a part of Canada's coaching staff at the 1988 Winter Olympics. He also was head coach of the Canadian Junior Team that won the gold medal at the 1990 World Junior Championships in Helsinki, Finland. Additionally, Charron played for Montreal (1969-71), Detroit (1970-75), Kansas City (1974-76) and Washington (1976-81), collecting 530 points.
Pizzutelli, 53, joined the Panthers after spending the past 19 seasons with the Buffalo Sabres. After graduating from high school, Pizzutelli achieved the rank of Sp-4 in the U.S. Army, where he served a tour of duty in Vietnam. From 1980-82, he served as assistant athletic trainer for the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League and assumed the team's top position from 1983-85, including the team's 1983 Calder Cup Championship season. The athletic trainer and licensed massage therapist accepted the Sabres' head athletic trainer position in 1985.
Pizzutelli also served as athletic trainer for the 1991 Canada Cup Tournament and the 1996 NHL All-Star Game. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association and the New York State Athletic Trainers Association.
The Rampage open their third AHL season on Fri., Oct. 15 against the Houston Aeros
at the SBC Center at 7 p.m. All regular season games can be heard on the
