Charlotte Checkers News Release

Charlotte N.C. - It was the last game of the regular season for the Checkers and they didn't end on a very good note as they were shutout by the Gwinnett Gladiators, who were battling for a playoff birth, 3-0.

The only goal of the first period was tallied by the Gladiators while on the man-advantage. Defenseman Jeff Mason blasted a shot from the right point that was redirected into the net by forward Brandon Kalenicki at 13:54 past Checkers goalie Jeff Jakaitis. After twenty minutes of action, it was 1-0 Gwinnett.

There was no scoring in the second period and the third period was controlled by the Gladiators when they tallied an insurance goal on the power-play. Gwinnett forward Adam Berti batted in rebound off a point shot at 2:08 giving his team a 2-0 lead. Despite power-play advantages for the Checkers throughout the period, they were unable to come up with a goal and Gwinnett sealed the game with an empty netter by Dirk Southern at 19:32.

The Checkers are playing their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The first playoff game takes place on April 9 against the South Carolina Stingrays at 7 P.M. start at The EXTREME ICE CENTER in Indian Trail, N.C.
